The Brain- from the Fantastic to the Forgetful is a dementia awareness resource for teachers and students developed by Dementia Services Information and Development Centre (DSIDC). Students will learn about topics including positive ageing, how the brain works, brain health, dementia and perceptions of dementia.
Schools can play a very important role in helping to educate young people about dementia. By educating young people about dementia and associated risk factors such as obesity, smoking, Type 2 diabetes and lack of physical activity we can create a dementia-friendly generation that is more aware of dementia and more supportive of people living with dementia both at home and in the community.
The teaching resource can be integrated into Junior Cycle subjects SPHE, CSPE, Science and Wellbeing in Junior Cycle. The resource will help to support students in each of the six indicators for wellbeing as set out in the NCCA Guidelines for Wellbeing in Junior Cycle. It is also possible to integrate the resource into Transition Year Science or other relevant subjects and Transition Year Units
Teaching resources, ideas for classroom discussions, action projects, workbook activities and links to extra reading are included in both the manual and the workbook.
