WorldWise Global Schools (WWGS) is Ireland’s national programme for development education (DE) at post-primary level, and is funded by Irish Aid (Department of Foreign Affairs). WWGS has been in operation since 2012 and promotes the value of development education as an active, learner-centered response to global justice issues. By fostering key skills of critical thinking, analysis and cooperation, as well as core values of solidarity and empathy, DE provides a much-needed channel for students and teachers to take informed action in response to the global challenges we face.
WWGS offers a comprehensive range of supports to enable schools to embed DE into their teaching and learning including:
- Grant funding to support development education initiatives at post-primary level through its annual grant call
- The Global Passport, an award given to schools to recognise and validate their DE work and achievements, which also provides a clear framework for whole-school DE engagement and planning (see attached flyer for more details of the Global Passport Award)
- An annual programme of training and CPD for post-primary teachers, to build their confidence and skills in incorporating DE into their classrooms
- National and regional events to encourage peer learning and sharing of best practice
- Tailored resources through the Doing DE series of curricular guides, which integrate DE into a wide range of post-primary subjects.
- Hands-on support and guidance through dedicated programme staff, who are available online, by phone and in person.
